Ep. 7 | Ask Me Anything: Bologna Business School Edition

In a recent "Ask Me Anything" session, I shared insightful experiences and answered thought-provoking questions related to leadership, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In this blog post, we will delve into the diverse and enlightening topics covered during the episode, exploring the essence of leading with inclusion and the cultivation of wisdom within organizational contexts.

The Challenge of Leading DEI in a Global Context:

During the episode, I recounted my recent experience speaking at the Bologna Business School Global MBA program, where I discussed the challenges of leading DEI. There were diverse backgrounds and it's important to understand diversity and inclusion through a global lens. Reflecting on this, organizations must recognize the multifaceted nature of diversity, ensuring that inclusion efforts transcend regional and industry-specific perspectives. By embracing global diversity, organizations can foster richer and more meaningful relationships, contributing to a more inclusive work environment.

The Fundamental Role of Leadership Development in DEI:

Through some of my stories and insights, I highlight the significance of leadership development and culture in creating inclusive organizations. It is essential that the role of leaders understand and navigate the complexities of diversity. Leadership must begin with introspection, with leaders looking inward to understand differing perspectives and experiences. By fostering a culture of learning, curiosity, and humility, leaders lay the foundation for inclusive environments where employees feel empowered to contribute their best.

Navigating the Backlash Against DEI Efforts:

Addressing the prevalent backlash against DEI initiatives, I underscored a critical leadership challenge. While organizations excel at strategy and tactics, leading an inclusive culture is primarily a leadership and culture development issue. There is a need for leaders to navigate the shame cycle, acknowledging potential gaps in understanding and committing to learning and behavioral changes. Thus, rather than focusing solely on metrics and spreadsheets, organizations should prioritize investing in leadership growth and fostering inclusive cultures.

Balancing Authenticity and Flexibility:

A deeply insightful question arose regarding the balance between authenticity and flexibility in professional environments. My response illuminated the concept of flexing versus twisting, emphasizing the importance of remaining grounded in individual authenticity while being adaptable to different contexts. It was evident that leaders play a pivotal role in creating contexts where individuals can flex without twisting, ensuring that they can authentically engage while maintaining respectful and inclusive interactions.

Influence and Organizational Integrity:

Leaders often aspire to influence organizational change, however, I want to caution that some organizations may not be amenable to change due to deeply entrenched cultural norms. Acknowledging an organization's integrity and aligning it with personal values holds significance in cultivating inclusive work cultures. This underscores the importance of assessing the organizational culture to determine opportunities for meaningful influence.

The Maturity and Inclusion Conundrum:

During this AMA, the question of achieving maturity for inclusive leadership was pondered. My response deliberated on the blend of life experiences and proactive support in nurturing cultural wisdom. The role of grace, curiosity, and empathetic coaching in developing inclusive leaders is important. This section illuminated the multifaceted approach needed to cultivate inclusive leadership, encompassing both individual experiences and purposeful organizational support.

I hope this AMA session offered a wealth of knowledge, shedding light on the intricacies of leading with inclusion and cultural wisdom. The insights shared serve as a compass for leaders navigating the complexities of DEI efforts and leadership development. As organizations chart their paths toward inclusive cultures, the fusion of introspection, authenticity, flexibility, and compassionate leadership emerges as a guiding paradigm. Embracing a global perspective while honoring individual experiences is paramount in shaping inclusive work environments. By embracing these principles, leaders can steer their organizations towards a future defined by inclusive leadership, cultural wisdom, and collective growth.
